Lincoln County, Nebraska commissioners faced continued public inquiry regarding prospective data center development during a recent meeting. Resident Diane Huebner of Wallace questioned the scale of potential data centers and the county's process for gathering information, expressing concerns about the lack of details available to the public. Commissioner Chairman Kent Weems clarified that no specific facility applications have been submitted to the board, despite the North Platte Chamber/Development Corporation's reports of company inquiries.
Weems assured the public that the commissioners are addressing concerns by revising the county's nine-page zoning regulations pertaining to data centers. Deputy Lincoln County Attorney Tyler Volkmer is reviewing proposals, including a 36-page recommendation from residents, and preparing a 20-page legal memo for the board. A public hearing on the updated zoning regulations is scheduled for August 31, with a potential vote.
Huebner also questioned why Lincoln County has not declared a moratorium on data centers, contrasting it with actions taken by other Nebraska counties. Commissioners Weems and Chris Bruns explained that Lincoln County's comprehensive land plan, adopted in March after 3.5 years of updates, provides a robust foundation for decision-making, negating the need for a moratorium. Zoning Administrator Judy Clark and Commissioner Wuehler also committed to ongoing review and adaptation of regulations, emphasizing that the process is not a
