Salix City Council reschedules cancelled meeting for Thursday, August 20
The Salix City Council rescheduled a meeting to consider a data center moratorium after its cancellation due to alleged death threats. Google is interested in building a data center on recently annexed land, leading to significant community division and opposition.
The Salix City Council has rescheduled a critical meeting for Thursday, August 20, following its cancellation due to alleged death threats targeting the mayor. The original meeting was slated to discuss a proposed moratorium on data center development in Salix, Iowa. The Woodbury County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the threats.
The controversy stems from Google's recent announcement of interest in building a data center on 900 acres of land annexed by Salix in May. The prospect has sharply divided the community, with groups like the 'Salix Guardian Alliance' expressing deep concern and condemning the threats, while 'Salix Area Data Centers: Benefits for Our Community' criticizes fear-mongering tactics. Woodbury County Supervisor Matthew Ung also weighed in, calling for more transparency and criticizing vague communication from city officials regarding the project and meeting procedures.
