Howell Township extends data center moratorium until May 2027
Howell Township extended its data center moratorium until May 2027 while officials work on permanent regulations. The moratorium follows resident opposition to a proposed data center project spanning more than 1,000 acres, and it will end early if the new ordinance is completed.
Howell Township has extended its data center moratorium until May 2027, continuing a pause on the establishment, permitting, approval, construction and installation of data centers. The moratorium was first adopted in November 2025 and previously extended in May 2026.
Treasurer Jonathan Hohenstein said the extension resolution includes language affirming that the temporary measure is reasonable. Township officials and planners are expected to complete permanent data center regulations, which would automatically terminate the moratorium if adopted before the extension expires.
The action follows resident opposition to a proposed data center project covering more than 1,000 acres in Howell Township. Officials formed a Resident Research Committee to study data center and cryptocurrency mining ordinances adopted elsewhere, while nearby Marion Township is also considering a public hearing on a draft ordinance.
