San Francisco approves 45-day moratorium on data centers
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an immediate 45-day moratorium on data center approvals. The measure directs the Planning Department to study energy, water, air quality, land-use and community impacts, and the pause could be extended for up to 22 months.
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a 45-day moratorium on data centers, temporarily halting city approvals while the Planning Department studies their infrastructure and community impacts. The review will address energy and water use, air quality, land use, community concerns and the need for clearer definitions and long-term controls.
Supervisor Shamann Walton, who authored the measure, said city officials will seek stronger protections and meaningful public input. The moratorium took effect immediately and could be extended to 22 months, with a progress hearing planned for November. Walton’s district includes two of the city’s six reported data center sites and a potential waterfront project in Dogpatch had recently drawn attention.
