The Box Elder County Commission in Utah recently postponed a vote on a sprawling 40,000-acre AI data center complex, known as the Stratos Project, after more than an hour of public questioning. The decision to table the vote until the following Monday was made to allow commissioners additional time to review project details with their attorneys and to accommodate the large number of community members wishing to attend the meeting.
Residents present at the meeting expressed significant concerns regarding the project's potential environmental impact, including water consumption, air pollution, and the strain on local resources. Despite the project's proponents, including investor Kevin O'Leary, highlighting its potential to create over 2,000 jobs and generate 9 gigawatts of power through on-site energy, community members voiced strong opposition to Utah becoming a "dumping ground" for such development. Commissioners also acknowledged their own frustrations with the suddenness of the decision-making process and are weighing the potential tax revenue against the necessary infrastructure costs, such as building sewer systems and fire departments.
