Rep. McGovern Pushes Federal Legislation to Address Data Center Climate and Environmental Impact

U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern recently met with the Worcester-area chapter of Climate Hope Affiliates to discuss the pressing issues surrounding data center expansion and its impact on the environment and public health. As a strong advocate for his constituents, McGovern is actively fighting against what he describes as unbridled capitalism damaging the environment and accelerating climate change through unbridled data center growth.

The discussions highlighted the enormous electrical demands of data centers, which contribute to increased electric bills and accelerate climate change unless mandated to use fossil fuel-free energy sources. A significant concern raised was the environmental justice implications, as many data centers are being constructed in underserved communities, leading to further public health burdens for residents.

Two critical pieces of legislation are central to McGovern's efforts. The Data Center Transparency Act (H.R. 6984) would require the EPA to collect comprehensive data on data centers' water consumption, utility costs, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. The article cites the example of SpaceXAI's Colossus supercomputer in East Memphis, Tennessee, which reportedly operates its own methane-burning power plant, leading to significant air pollution and increased respiratory illnesses in the surrounding neighborhood.

The Preventing Rate Inflation in Consumer Energy, or PRICE, Act (H.R. 6983), aims to mandate that data centers transition to clean energy within a specific timeframe. Rep. McGovern has committed to cosponsoring and voting "yes" on both bills, aligning with Climate Hope Affiliates' mission to address the climate crisis and combat environmental injustice.
