Dozens of residents packed Beloit City Hall on Tuesday night to urge the city council to establish regulations for data center development before any formal proposals reach the city. Community members expressed concerns about large-scale data center projects in the region, particularly near the towns of Beloit and Turtle, highlighting issues of transparency and a lack of public input.

Council Vice President Yusuf Adama stated he placed the discussion on the agenda after hearing from the community about the need for proper oversight and transparency regarding major developments, citing concerns that "billion dollar companies" and developers often present projects without adequate public consultation. He emphasized that the city of Beloit currently has no active data center projects, making this an opportune moment for proactive rule-making.

Residents, including one who said, "I don't think we know enough. I don't think the county knows enough about data center development. I don't think the state knows enough," encouraged the council to "put the brakes on" immediate decisions. Council members acknowledged the public's significant interest in the issue and indicated their intention to thoroughly research data center impacts before formulating any definitive policies.
