During the discussion, proponents highlighted the necessity of data centers for critical services such as banks, hospitals, and grocery stores, emphasizing their unseen daily use by the general public. However, opponents voiced strong concerns. One individual described living near a data center in Virginia as being "inside of a prison" due to inescapable noise, light, and heat, and contaminated water wells.
A commissioner indicated that the overwhelming public outcry significantly influenced the vote, noting that out of almost 400 comments received, more than 370 were in opposition to the data center proposal.
