At their annual meeting in La Crosse, the Dairyland Power Cooperative discussed the growing concern over data center development and its impact on electricity consumption and rural economies. CEO Brent Ridge highlighted the economic benefits data centers can bring to small communities, while an executive from the North America Electric Reliability Corporation spoke about increasing risks to energy production and rising demand across the continent.
Dairyland Power Cooperative members convened in La Crosse for their annual meeting to address the growing concern over data center development, particularly in rural areas, and their impact on electricity consumption and costs. Dairyland CEO Brent Ridge emphasized the potential for data centers to foster prosperity in small communities, stating that restricting such growth would perpetuate poverty in rural America. He also noted that a major winter storm had forced the co-op to increase rates for customers.
During the meeting, Dairyland reported a 24 percent increase in revenue over the last five years, with average annual rate increases of only 1 percent. Camilo Serna, an executive from the North America Electric Reliability Corporation, delivered a keynote address, highlighting increasing risks to energy production across North America and unprecedented demand growth for affordable electricity. The discussions underscored the balancing act between economic development, energy reliability, and consumer costs in the context of expanding data center infrastructure.
