Palm Beach County commissioners reject Project Tango AI data center after nearly 12 hours of debate
Palm Beach County commissioners unanimously rejected "Project Tango," a proposed hyperscale AI data center near Arden, after nearly 12 hours of public debate. Concerns were raised regarding sound, vibration, environmental impact, and the suitability of the industrial site for such a project. This denial follows the approval of a separate, 300,000-square-foot data center project and substation in the same area in 2016.
After a nearly 12-hour debate involving hundreds of public comments, Palm Beach County commissioners unanimously voted to deny "Project Tango," a proposed hyperscale AI data center near Arden, Florida. The primary concerns raised during the lengthy discussion focused on potential sound and vibration impacts, environmental effects, and whether the site was truly appropriate for industrial development. The applicant, who was not named in the report, failed to satisfy the commissioners regarding the project's impacts on the nearby Arden community and its school.
Commissioner Greg Weiss highlighted the thoroughness of the applicant's presentation but noted its failure to address community concerns adequately, leading to his vote against the project. It was also noted that a separate data center project, including a 300,000-square-foot facility and a Florida Power & Light substation, had already been approved in the same area in 2016. Pro-development advocate Kevin Cox mentioned this prior approval, indicating that the new denial would not affect the previously approved project's progress, which is still in the evaluation phase.
