City Council OKs Wastewater Discharge Rules for Data Centers, Tables Water-Use Ordinance
The San Angelo City Council approved new wastewater discharge regulations for future data centers, which are described as some of the nation's strictest. However, a proposed water-use ordinance was tabled due to a tie vote. Residents expressed opposition to both the regulations and a potential data center development involving Skybox Datacenters and Emergent Data Centers.
The San Angelo City Council voted 5-1 to approve new wastewater discharge regulations for future data centers during its June 2 meeting. The rules, along with previously adopted land-use regulations, are considered some of the strictest in the nation.
However, a proposed water-use ordinance was tabled after a tie vote, with one council member absent from the seven-member body. The council decided to postpone the water-use ordinance until its next meeting on June 16, following a consultation with the city's legal team.
Several residents voiced their opposition during the public hearing, speaking against both the water-use regulations and a potential data center development in the city, which could involve companies like Skybox Datacenters and Emergent Data Centers.
