The Chamblee City Council in Georgia unanimously adopted a temporary 180-day moratorium on new data center applications during its July 21 meeting. The measure, spearheaded by At-Large Councilmember Jimmy Furst, halts the acceptance of all new data center proposals, providing the city with crucial time to review current regulations and assess whether updates are necessary.
Councilman Furst emphasized the city's responsibility to proactively plan for emerging developments like data centers, noting their significant potential impacts on local energy consumption, water resources, tree canopy, stormwater infrastructure, noise levels, and adjacent neighborhoods. He stated that the temporary pause enables a careful evaluation of these effects before any new applications are considered.
The moratorium is set to remain in effect through January 16, 2027, during which time city officials will work to establish thoughtful and locally appropriate standards for future data center development within Chamblee.
