Texas leaders push for data center regulations amid rapid growth

Texas state and local leaders are increasingly focusing on the rapid growth of data centers, with discussions underway to implement new regulations. The Texas Senate Finance Committee recently met to examine the impact of data centers across the state, considering whether new guidelines are needed to manage their expansion.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller stated that regulations are long overdue, citing concerns about the state's power grid. He highlighted that while the current capacity is sufficient, planned data centers seeking to connect to the grid would add 500 megawatts, which is unsustainable for the existing infrastructure. In the Coastal Bend, the Corpus Christi City Council has agreed to develop land regulations for data centers. At-large councilman Mark Scott noted that data centers often build in counties to avoid city regulations, and the city aims to balance property rights with protecting local communities from negative impacts.
Governor Greg Abbott's office issued a statement confirming the governor's stance that data centers should not take precedence over Texas families. To this end, Governor Abbott has directed the Public Utility Commission (PUC) and ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) to mandate that data centers be responsible for their own infrastructure and power supply.
