Oracle opens Project Jupiter for tour, cites closed-loop cooling amid water worries
Oracle gave KFOX14 a tour of its Project Jupiter data center under construction in Santa Teresa. The facility will use closed-loop cooling to recirculate water, but its broader water demand remains a concern in the water-scarce Chihuahuan Desert.
Oracle provided a firsthand tour of Project Jupiter, a large data center under construction in Santa Teresa. The tour included the equipment staging area, Data Center Building A and the facility’s closed-loop cooling infrastructure. Oracle says the project will ultimately include four data-storage buildings and that its cooling system is designed to recirculate water.
Water use remains a central concern because the project is located in the Chihuahuan Desert. Mahesh Thiagarajan, Oracle’s executive vice president and head of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, defended the project’s potential community benefits, including jobs and an estimated $13 billion economic impact. He said Oracle reviewed more than 50 sites before selecting New Mexico and would make its economic-impact reports available for outside feedback.
