Congressman Chuck Fleischmann, representing Chattanooga, Tennessee, has voiced concerns that Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) customers should not be subjected to unexpected electric rate increases stemming from the growing demand from data centers. His comments follow TVA's confirmation that it is considering potential rate adjustments for large-scale power users, including AI and cloud computing data centers, due to rising electricity demand across the Tennessee Valley.
Fleischmann, who claims a close working relationship with TVA leadership, assured constituents that any rate increases would be communicated transparently. He also referenced a recent executive order from President Donald Trump, which he believes would mandate data centers to cover their own power costs, preventing the burden from shifting to regular customers.
The congressman acknowledged the utility's challenges with increased demand, noting that TVA is already expanding power generation, including new natural gas plants. TVA provides service to local utilities, such as Chattanooga's EPB, across seven states. No formal rate changes have been announced by the utility at this time.
