The decision was prompted by strong community opposition and concerns from Palm Beach residents regarding potential impacts on local wetlands, increased utility costs, noise, and water resource depletion.
This action follows the county's rejection of the 600MW 'Project Tango' proposal in July, which also faced warnings about its environmental and financial effects on residents. The moratorium stands in contrast to former President Donald Trump's public statements advocating for data centers, which he claims bring economic benefits and are desired by "smart communities."
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a vocal critic of large-scale data centers, highlighted the irony of Trump's home county blocking such developments.
