Gov: City of Salix, Salix Mayor Kevin Nelson

Salix, Iowa – City leaders and residents recently gathered at city hall to discuss the potential construction of a data center, a meeting that followed a postponement due to threats against officials. Salix Mayor Kevin Nelson remarked on the calmer atmosphere of the recent discussion, noting it was "very civil overall" compared to expectations.

Database Engineer Andy Clayton, a resident who supports the data center's development, indicated a growing shift in community support. He urged those in opposition to gather more information, specifically mentioning Google and inquiries about water usage, to foster a more "rational, educated decision."

A key outcome of the meeting was the failure to pass a proposed moratorium on data center development. Mayor Nelson clarified that this decision means "Google and MidAmerican can continue their discussions with the City of Salix and the people that live within the City of Salix." However, Nelson emphasized that the data center becoming a reality is still a distant prospect, and no date has been set for the next discussion.
