The Nashville Metropolitan Council has approved a temporary moratorium on new data center development until December 1st, alongside the implementation of new regulations. This decision comes in response to strong opposition from residents and taxpayers, who voiced concerns about electricity demand, environmental impacts, and neighborhood disruptions caused by data centers, particularly focusing on a project proposed near the Nashville Zoo.
Specifically, the new regulations prohibit small data centers within 100 feet of churches, schools, or zoos, and large data centers within half a mile. Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell has expressed a desire to acquire the land for the contested data center project from developer DC BLOX through eminent domain, aiming to halt the project entirely. DC BLOX has stated its efforts to cooperate with Nashville authorities and be a good neighbor, noting the project's proximity to Fisk University.
Surprisingly, the issue has garnered bipartisan consensus in Tennessee, with US Senator Marsha Blackburn and Nashville Democrat Justin Jones both expressing reservations about the data center's location. While advocates for data centers highlight their economic benefits, such as job creation and tax revenue, supporters for this specific Nashville project are scarce due to its contentious location. The discussion also touched upon broader national implications, including President Donald Trump's pledge to protect electricity ratepayers amidst the surge in AI-driven data center expansion.
