Public hearing about data centers planned as Hopkinsville works to establish regulations

The City of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, through its Community and Development Services department, is preparing for a second public hearing to engage residents in discussions regarding proposed data center regulations. This hearing, scheduled for September 28 at Hopkinsville Community College, follows an August announcement by Hopkinsville Electric System (HES) about a crypto mining facility's plan to expand into a 50-megawatt data center within the city.
The proposed amendment to the Hopkinsville Zoning Ordinance seeks to preemptively establish definitions and standards for data center developments. These regulations would address the siting, construction, installation, and operation of such facilities, as well as identify specific zoning districts where different types of data centers would be permitted. The initiative to establish these regulations began in June, predating the HES announcement.
Following the public hearing, Community and Development Services plans to draft the final ordinance amendment. This draft will then be presented to the Hopkinsville City Council for its approval at a future date, integrating community feedback gathered during the hearing. Residents attending the meeting will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide input on the proposed information.
