Data centers top agenda for EPA’s local government council

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that data centers will be a top agenda item for its newly constituted Local Government Advisory Committee. This move comes as the Trump administration actively promotes the development of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, including data centers, as crucial for global competitiveness.
The committee, comprising 22 state and municipal officials, will hold a public meeting in September to discuss the challenges local governments encounter when siting and developing data centers in an environmentally responsible manner. Thirteen new members and nine returning members were appointed to the committee on Wednesday.
Public sentiment has become a significant factor, with voters across the country protesting data center projects. Concerns primarily revolve around escalating electricity costs and potential increases in air and water pollution stemming from these developments.
David Painter, a Clermont County Commissioner from Ohio and chair of the advisory committee, emphasized the importance of aligning environmental regulations with responsible project performance. He stated that ensuring this synergy is the committee's "number one goal" to advance America while safeguarding the environment for future generations.
