Franklin County leaders are advancing a revised Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance (SALDO) aimed at regulating data center development in municipalities lacking specific industrial zoning. The proposed rules have undergone revisions following significant public backlash, including 107 comments, which forced county commissioners to postpone an earlier vote.
Residents, including those who spoke at a recent public meeting, have raised concerns primarily regarding environmental and energy protections, advocating for stronger safeguards for freshwater resources and native ecosystems. They also expressed dismay over the removal of a 25% energy generation requirement for developers, citing its potential impact on agricultural land.
Brian Zimmerman, a supervisor in Lurgan Township, highlighted his community's reliance on these county-level regulations due to their lack of local zoning. The commissioners are scheduled to vote on the ordinance at their May 20th meeting, with the understanding that the document can be amended in the future.
