Effingham County data center under fire

Environmental activists and five residents have filed a lawsuit against the Effingham County Industrial Development Authority, alleging unlawful secrecy surrounding a deal for an OpenAI data center. One Hundred Miles Inc. and the residents claim the authority failed to adequately notify the public about a crucial board vote that approved a 50% tax break and land ownership for OpenAI.
Jeff Beauvais, a North Coast Advocate, criticized the decision, stating, "We cannot sacrifice all of our other concerns and well-being at the altar of increasing the tax revenue." The lawsuit, with legal counsel from the Southern Environmental Law Center, was filed by sending notice, though the Authority awaits formal service. The Effingham County Industrial Development Authority has stated its commitment to legal business practices and supporting the county's economic interests, but has declined further comment on the pending litigation.
