Residents of Independence have filed a petition to recall City Councilman John Perkins following his vote to approve $150 billion in bonds for a hyperscale AI data center developed by Nebius. Independence, Missouri residents have initiated a petition to recall City Councilman John Perkins, who represents the city's 1st District. The petition was filed following Perkins' vote to approve $150 billion in bonds for the proposed Nebius hyperscale AI data center, a 400-acre facility that has drawn significant community opposition.
Voters contend that Councilman Perkins failed to adequately represent his constituents, did not maintain transparency during the approval process, and neglected to advocate for an independent environmental impact study, despite concerns about pollution and environmental effects associated with similar facilities. McKenna Cobb, an organizer with the Independence Community Action Committee, stated that residents feel their concerns are being disregarded by City Hall.
The Nebius data center project has been a focal point of controversy, with neighbors raising concerns about its potential impact on utility bills and the local environment. If organizers successfully collect enough signatures within 30 days, a recall election will be held to determine if Perkins should be removed from office before his term ends in April 2028. Councilman Perkins acknowledged the petition, stating it does not reflect the "full picture of the work being done in District 1".
