City, state, and federal leaders in Laredo, Texas, are pushing for stronger oversight of data center development. Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino has directed City Manager Joe Neeb to develop a local regulatory framework to evaluate future proposals based on water consumption, electricity demand, environmental impacts, and long-term sustainability, despite no applications currently being pending.
This initiative follows a City Council meeting where residents voiced concerns and urged a temporary moratorium. Mayor Trevino also scheduled a public town hall for August 11 to gather feedback. Separately, State Rep. Richard Peña Raymond formally asked Gov. Greg Abbott to call a special legislative session to establish statewide regulations and implement a statewide moratorium on new data center permitting and construction approvals, arguing that cities should not be left to create inconsistent regulations.
U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar echoed these concerns, stressing the need for local governments to assess long-term impacts on water supplies, electrical infrastructure, and taxpayers. He also highlighted that many potential projects are outside Laredo's city limits, urging Webb County officials to engage given their authority over infrastructure agreements and tax abatements.
