The Salix City Council rejected a proposed 12-month moratorium on data centers on Thursday, clearing the way for Google to proceed with its exploration of a potential data center project in the area. The vote took place during a city council meeting that had been delayed due to death threats posted on social media.

The debate saw passionate arguments from both proponents and opponents of the moratorium. Residents advocating for the pause argued it would provide necessary time for the community to research and address concerns. Conversely, supporters emphasized the economic benefits and job creation the project could bring.

During the discussion, City Council Member Gene Monk expressed confusion, questioning whether the moratorium had already been approved at a previous July meeting and if the current vote was merely on official language. Mayor Kevin Nelson clarified that no moratorium had been legally passed in July, confirming its failure to pass both then and at Thursday's meeting. Representatives from Midamerican Energy and Google attended the meeting, stating that the project is in its early stages and they intend to continue discussions with the community.
