The Colorado Springs Planning Commission convened a public meeting to discuss "Project Taurus," a proposal by California-based company Raeden to construct a 50-megawatt data center in the city, off the Garden of the Gods Road corridor. The project, intended for an unnamed customer, has met with strong opposition from local residents.
Concerns raised by the community include potential impacts on water and power resources, increased noise, and broader environmental effects. Proponents, however, argue the AI data center is vital infrastructure that will stimulate economic growth and support the military's increasing data processing needs, particularly for the Space Force.
The meeting, which drew around 200 attendees, included presentations from a staff report, five resident groups appealing the data center's approval, and Raeden representatives. Following these presentations, three hours were allotted for public comments from opponents, and another three for supporters. A decision from the Planning Commission was anticipated later in the day, with the understanding that any ruling could be appealed to the Colorado Springs City Council, which holds the final authority on planning matters.
