New data center opens in Central Lubbock
Duos Edge AI has opened new 'edge' data center facilities in Central Lubbock, Texas. These facilities are designed for minimal environmental impact, featuring zero water usage through air conditioning and low electricity demand comparable to a McDonald's. The company aims to be a good steward of local resources and plans further expansion across Texas and into Georgia.
Duos Edge AI has officially opened two new "edge" data center facilities in Central Lubbock, Texas, near 19th and Avenue Q. The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the million-dollar facilities, which are small, decentralized computing centers designed to be non-impactful to the community. Bill Radford, Vice President of Technology for Duos Edge AI, emphasized the company's commitment to resource stewardship.
Radford highlighted that the facilities have a "zero water usage policy," utilizing advanced air conditioning instead of water-intensive cooling towers, and even generate water from humidity. Additionally, the data centers have a maximum capacity of 200 kilowatts, equating to the energy consumption of a McDonald's, and are strategically connected close to the power grid to prevent burdening local energy costs on neighbors.
The facilities offer 15 cabinets for rent, where customers bring their own equipment for space, power, and high-speed cross-connects to local phone companies. Lubbock was chosen due to significant local interest, and Duos Edge AI plans further expansion across Texas, with facilities already in Corpus Christi, Victoria, Amarillo, and Waco, and future plans for Georgia, starting in Savannah. Although Duos stated it leased land from Lubbock ISD, the school district denied this, clarifying it is not a customer and does not plan to be.
