Microsoft, Hut 8, and Equinix Commit to Updated Data Center Guidelines

Governor Greg Abbott announced that technology companies Microsoft, Hut 8, and Equinix have committed to complying with the statewide standards and guidelines he previously established for data centers in Texas. The Governor emphasized that these guardrails are designed to protect the electric grid, conserve water, ensure data centers respect neighborhoods, and prevent costs from being passed onto Texas families.

Earlier this summer, Governor Abbott directed the Public Utilities Commission of Texas (PUCT) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to implement these standards. The directives mandate that data centers protect grid stability, avoid burdening the grid, respect property rights, pay for their own infrastructure, avoid rate increases for consumers, and contribute to the local tax base.

The PUCT and ERCOT are tasked with examining and auditing each data center project to ensure compliance with these requirements before they can proceed. Governor Abbott warned that any company failing to meet ERCOT's audit process would have its approval denied. He noted that since these directives were issued, data centers across the state have either announced full compliance or ceased their projects.
