A new report from energy research firm Enverus projects that nearly 40% of all new data center capacity additions through 2030 will rely entirely on off-grid, natural gas-fired power. This shift is driven by strained electrical grids and extensive wait times for public utility hookups, leading hyperscalers to invest an estimated $5 trillion in 62 gigawatts of private, behind-the-meter generation, particularly in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

Thomas Mulvihill, an Enverus research associate, noted that while companies prefer grid connection, saturation has forced a pivot to off-grid solutions to meet critical "time-to-power" needs. Texas energy analyst David Blackmon emphasized that this migration is a necessity for speed and revenue, not a climate strategy, as AI data centers generate substantial profits per megawatt annually. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) faces a particularly acute bottleneck, with 438 GW of large-load interconnection requests, 90% from data centers, far exceeding its historical peak demand.

The reliance on natural gas presents challenges for corporate climate goals. While Texas and Louisiana offer significant potential for carbon storage, making decarbonization strategies more feasible, Ohio and Pennsylvania lack similar geological advantages and face long grid connection delays for renewable projects. Consequently, tech companies are deploying portable gas turbines and fuel cells on-site, a practice drawing criticism from environmental groups.

A coalition, including the Sierra Club and the Environmental Integrity Project, recently threatened to sue Vantage Data Centers and VoltaGrid over their San Antonio, Texas, off-grid gas-fired power generation, alleging the companies are exploiting a legal loophole to bypass federal Clean Air Act reviews and operate massive power plants near residential areas without adequate disclosure or monitoring. A report by the Environmental Integrity Project also indicated that 74 planned off-grid data center power plants nationwide could collectively emit 662 million tons of greenhouse gases annually, equivalent to Australia's climate footprint.
