The Portland Municipal Planning Commission convened on June 9 at Portland City Hall, addressing several site plan and rezoning requests in addition to discussing future data center developments. Among other agenda items, the commission approved a rezoning request from Tim Biggs for 0.45 acres at 840 South Broadway, changing it from residential to office professional, despite public concerns regarding traffic and noise. They also approved site plan requests for Phase 2 of the 5 Chefs & Occasions development, Portland Commons by L.I. Smith & Associates, and an expansion for Food Warming Equipment.

A key focus of the meeting was a discussion on how data centers should be incorporated into Portland's zoning regulations. Commissioners considered options such as maintaining data centers within the Industrial General district with added restrictions, creating an Industrial Special district, or utilizing a commercial planned unit development process. After deliberating on the distinctions between various industrial zoning classifications, the commission concluded that further study is necessary before presenting formal recommendations to planning officials and elected leaders.
