In San Marcos, Central Texas, residents are organizing across political lines against the construction of large AI data centers. Kay Weinberg of the Data Center Action Coalition said opponents are concerned about pollution, heat, water use, rural land destruction and the broader effects of technology development on their communities.

The campaign has defeated the CyrusOne Mayberry project and the Carson Safety project. Weinberg said the Cloudburst and Palomino Alpha projects have been delayed for more than a year through strategies involving small rural water boards and restrictions on access to water. The movement has also secured a one-year moratorium and is sharing its tactics with opposition groups in other Central Texas communities.
