Bethlehem City Council voted 7-0 to adopt new data center regulations requiring extensive environmental, energy, water and other impact studies, along with a 1,000-foot setback from homes and schools. The rules will not apply to Boyle Construction's proposed data center at 2148 Industrial Drive, which faces a public hearing on Nov. 12 amid strong resident opposition.

Bethlehem City Council unanimously approved an ordinance amendment establishing a data center definition and imposing new development standards. The rules require studies of environmental impacts, energy management, water use, heat, light, sewer and noise, limit data centers to the Industrial District by special exception, and prohibit construction within 1,000 feet of homes or schools.

The regulations will not apply to Boyle Construction's proposed facility at 2148 Industrial Drive because the application was submitted before the amendment. A Nov. 12 public hearing will address the project, which drew opposition from roughly 100 residents at the Oct. 6 meeting, including nearby resident Laurel Chuss and council members such as Bryan Callahan and Jo Daniels. Additional amendments imposing stricter requirements remain possible.
