
Meta builds a $50 billion dollar data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana
Meta is constructing its largest data center, "Hyperion," costing over $50 billion in Richland Parish, Louisiana, and recently expanded the 3,000-acre project. While Governor Jeff Landry and some locals see it as an economic opportunity, students and professors at Loyola University express skepticism about its long-term environmental impacts, particularly regarding water usage and transparency.
Meta has commenced construction and recently expanded its largest data center globally, dubbed "Hyperion," in rural Richland Parish, Louisiana. The project, valued at over $50 billion and spanning 3,000 acres, has garnered support from Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, who views it as a significant economic catalyst for the region's burgeoning tech sector and a source of high-paying jobs. Business professor Alessandro Braga noted Richland Parish's lower economic standing, emphasizing the potential for revitalization through Meta's investments, including its Data Center Community Action Grants program for local entities.
Despite the economic promise, the project faces environmental concerns, particularly from students and staff at Loyola University. Sophomore business student Maxfield Mabius expressed skepticism about potential "sound and water pollution" impacting local ecosystems, while junior computer science student Zachary Molnar referenced issues with an xAI data center in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, regarding unpunished pollution from unpermitted equipment.
Meta has committed to mitigating environmental impacts by implementing a "closed-circuit" system for water reduction and a "dry cooling" process, promising to replace more water than consumed. However, both Professor Braga and student Michelle Tran highlighted concerns about the novelty of these systems, the lack of data on their long-term sustainability, and the need for Meta to maintain transparency regarding the center's environmental footprint. Meta has partnered with Resource Environmental Solutions and funded the Mississippi River Water Action Collaborative for watershed restoration efforts in Louisiana.
