Meta has selected Indiana as one of four pilot states for its new America's Workforce Academy (AWA), a $115 million initiative aimed at combating a national shortage of skilled workers for AI infrastructure and data center construction. The tech giant announced the program on Tuesday, with the physical training center to be located in Indianapolis.

Meta has partnered with the Boone County Economic Development Corporation (Boone EDC) to facilitate recruitment efforts across Central Indiana. The AWA is designed to be accessible, requiring no prior experience or college degree, and will pay participants to learn through a 4-to-5-week intensive bootcamp. Upon acceptance, trainees receive a guaranteed job offer from one of Meta's construction contractor partners, contingent on graduation.

Rachel Peterson, Meta's Vice President of Data Centers, emphasized the urgent need for hundreds of thousands of skilled tradespeople, including electricians, mechanics, and fiber technicians, to build the company's rapidly expanding data centers. Boone EDC CEO Andrea Kern highlighted the program's potential to provide clear pathways into high-demand careers for residents of Boone County and Central Indiana. The initiative has received praise from figures like Mike Rowe, CEO of the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, and National Urban League President Marc H. Morial for its innovative approach to workforce development and its potential to create a more equitable workforce.
