Wells Voters to Decide on 180-Day Data Center Moratorium in November

The Wells Board of Selectmen has voted to place a 180-day data center moratorium on the November 3 ballot for town voters to decide. The proposed moratorium, if passed, would impose restrictions on data centers measuring 100,000 square feet or larger.
The decision was made during a joint public hearing with the planning board on Tuesday night, where residents shared their opinions on various topics, including mobile home rent control and short-term rental regulations. While a majority of the meeting focused on mobile home lot rents, the data center moratorium also garnered attention.
Only one resident spoke during the public hearing specifically to advocate for the data center moratorium to be sent to the ballot. Both the Board of Selectmen and the planning board unanimously supported the recommendation for voters to approve it. Separately, the Board of Selectmen also approved a 60-day emergency moratorium on mobile home lot rent increases and advanced a related rent stabilization ordinance to the November ballot.
