Lux Claridge, a physics teacher at Emporia High School, was arrested for interference with law enforcement during an Emporia, Kansas city commission meeting. Claridge was taken into custody after repeatedly clapping in support of speakers who were opposing the proposed Flint Hills Digital Campus data center, despite commissioners issuing warnings against disruptive behavior.
Claridge was released on bail and stated he plans to plead not guilty in court. His brother, David Claridge, criticized the arrest as unjust and is exploring options to recall city officials. Other community members present at the meeting expressed concern, citing constitutional rights to participate in civic activities and a general state of fear regarding the government's actions.
The Emporia Police Department issued a statement affirming its commitment to maintaining orderly public meetings while respecting citizens' rights. Despite the significant opposition and the arrest, the city commission ultimately passed the zoning changes necessary for the data center project to proceed.
