
Kings Fairgrounds clarifies edge computing project is not traditional data center
Kings and Tulare County Fairgrounds in California are evaluating a proposal from Global Stack to build a network of edge computing systems, which are distinct from traditional hyperscale data centers. The project aims to enhance emergency communications while generating revenue for the fairgrounds. Public comments at a Kings County Fair board meeting raised concerns about transparency, noise pollution, and utility bill impacts.
The Kings Fairgrounds and Tulare County Fairgrounds in California are currently assessing proposals from Global Stack, an infrastructure development firm, for a statewide network of edge computing systems across fairgrounds. Dena Rizzardo, CEO of both fairgrounds, emphasized that the project is not a traditional hyperscale commercial data center, but rather a smaller-scale edge computing system. According to Global Stack, these systems differ from hyperscale data centers and are intended to bolster California's emergency communications and resilience infrastructure, providing vital computing capabilities during times of crisis.
Ms. Rizzardo highlighted the fairgrounds' responsibility to explore opportunities that ensure long-term financial sustainability and community services. The edge computing system is projected to provide consistent, year-round revenue for the fairgrounds, with Global Stack funding all design, construction, and maintenance through private investment, without taxpayer cost. The company also anticipates the creation of local union construction jobs.
Despite the proposed benefits, more than 30 individuals voiced concerns at a July 20 Kings County Fair board meeting. Public comments focused on the project's perceived lack of transparency and potential impacts on noise pollution and local utility bills. Ms. Rizzardo assured the community that further opportunities for information, questions, and public participation in future meetings would be provided.
