Indio Extends Data Center Moratorium For Up To 1 Year
The Indio City Council unanimously extended the city’s urgency moratorium on data centers for up to one year. The extension gives city staff time to update the unified development code and specific plans while preparing a permanent citywide ban.
The Indio City Council unanimously extended its moratorium on data centers and other high-intensity computing uses for up to one year. City Attorney Steven Pacifico said the additional time will allow staff to address conflicts between the city code and specific plans that could otherwise create loopholes for future development.
The council is also considering amendments to the unified development code and all applicable specific plans, with tribal consultation required as part of the process. The moratorium would end automatically if a permanent prohibition takes effect; Mayor Elaine Holmes and public speaker Jonathan Becerra supported resolving the underlying zoning issues before adopting the ban.
