Caledonia Council approves 12-month data center moratorium
The Caledonia City Council approved a 12-month moratorium on data center development while the city develops zoning standards. Officials cited potential impacts on power, water, wastewater systems, noise and backup power as reasons for pausing development.
The Caledonia City Council approved Ordinance 2026-02, imposing a 12-month moratorium on data center development. City Administrator Jake Dickson said Caledonia’s existing regulations do not specifically address data centers or their potential demands on electricity, water and wastewater infrastructure, noise, and backup power.
The moratorium is intended to give the city time to develop zoning standards for data centers, with officials saying the work could be completed before the year-long pause ends. The council also considered road, utility, financial and public-safety matters during the meeting.
