Environmental groups called for more ratepayer protections in the proposal, while residents feared having to subsidize the infrastructure needed to serve data centers.

Wisconsin residents are voicing concerns over We Energies' proposed energy rate for data centers, arguing that the projects will raise energy costs and negatively impact the environment. Environmental groups are calling for stronger ratepayer protections, while electrical workers unions support the proposal, saying it will create jobs. The Public Service Commission is expected to rule on the case by May 1. Dozens of residents told the commission they fear having to subsidize the cost of new infrastructure built to serve data centers. Environmental groups want data centers to cover 100% of fixed costs, lower the eligibility threshold, and extend service agreement terms. We Energies says the plan protects ratepayers from bearing data center costs, but analysts have raised concerns that it may not be strong enough to prevent cost shifting. Residents can submit public comments on the case by February 17.
