After Data Center Talks End, Colravy Seeks Safeguards; County Advances NDA and Tax-Concession Bans
Mahomet Trustee Bruce Colravy asked the village to consider banning nondisclosure agreements, imposing a data center moratorium and supporting aquifer protections after the village ended discussions with Clean Cloud Energy. Champaign County separately has a moratorium on hyperscale data centers through April 2027 while it develops stricter zoning rules, leaving open a potential county-level path for the project.
Mahomet Trustee Bruce Colravy urged village staff to draft measures banning nondisclosure agreements, placing a moratorium on data centers and supporting the proposed Aquifer Protection Act. His requests followed the Village of Mahomet’s Oct. 5 announcement that it would no longer pursue opportunities with Clean Cloud Energy, which had discussed developing a data center east of town. Colravy said he opposed the project and that community distrust had grown over confidential negotiations. Residents raised concerns about the Mahomet Aquifer, noise, electricity rates, property values and the use of NDAs.
The village board took no action on Colravy’s requests, and officials are scheduled to wrap up discussion of Clean Cloud on Oct. 20. Champaign County Board President Jennifer Locke said the proposed site could theoretically still be pursued outside Mahomet’s jurisdiction, but the county has enacted a moratorium on hyperscale data centers through April 2027. County committees have advanced measures that will shape a new data center zoning ordinance, with final consideration expected before the moratorium expires.
