Estherville city council advances data center rules to public hearing
The Estherville City Council advanced draft data center rules to a Nov. 16 public hearing as the city considers a proposed facility. Council members and residents have raised concerns about noise, low-frequency impacts and potential health effects, particularly because of the facility’s proximity to an elementary school.
The Estherville City Council voted to advance the Planning and Zoning Commission’s draft data center rules to a public hearing scheduled for Nov. 16. City officials said they are discussing potential development with two developers, but only one data center would be considered for the community.
Noise and low-frequency impacts near an elementary school were central to the discussion. Council Member at Large David Hovinga cast the lone vote against advancing the measure, citing concerns about possible cardiovascular, mental health and other effects and calling for stronger protections. The proposal could be returned to the Planning and Zoning Commission for revisions after the hearing, and officials are encouraging residents to provide feedback.
