Utility commission moves to lower electricity costs, prepare for data centers
The Texas Utility Commission is working to lower electricity costs for residents while preparing for the increasing power demands of large-scale data centers. The commission is seeking clarity from the Texas Legislature on its authority to regulate data centers and has promised to require tech companies to bring their own power and pay upfront for grid connections.
The Texas Utility Commission (PUCT) is actively working to lower electricity costs for Texans while simultaneously addressing the significant power demands posed by a growing number of large-scale data centers. State Senator Charles Perry noted that 181 members will likely file bills concerning data center best practices during the 2027 legislative session, as the electrical grid prepares for increased demand.
In June, the Governor tasked the State Utility Commission, which oversees the ERCOT grid, with developing strategies to protect Texans from rising energy costs. This includes considering regulations for large data centers and reducing transmission fees. In its recent response, the PUCT requested clarification from the Texas Legislature regarding its regulatory authority, protection from foreign entities, and reaffirmed its goal to lower residential electricity bills.
Senator Perry indicated that these initiatives have been underway for some time. He expressed confidence that any short-term power or water interruptions would be resolved at the industry's expense. The Utility Commission has already committed to policies requiring tech companies to provide their own power sources and cover the upfront costs for connecting to the state's electrical grid.
