The University of Michigan has finalized the purchase of 124 acres on Textile Road in Ypsilanti Township, bringing its total landholding at the site to nearly 144 acres. This property is being considered as a potential location for a planned "high-performing computing facility" intended for research in collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory. The university asserts that this facility is distinct from a commercial data center, will be used for research, and will have significantly lower energy consumption.
However, the acquisition has been met with considerable resistance from Ypsilanti Township officials and residents. Last August, the township formally opposed the Textile Road site through a resolution, citing
