Michigan's expanding hyperscale artificial intelligence data center industry faces challenges regarding its enormous electricity consumption, raising questions about the need for new utility infrastructure and its associated costs. Elon Musk's acquisition of APR Energy, a provider of rapidly deployable power generation, for his AI operations, suggests a trend toward on-site power solutions.
Brighton-based Bratic Enterprise, led by founder Stevan Bratic, proposes a similar strategy for Michigan data centers. Bratic claims his company can design microgrid systems capable of meeting 100% of a hyperscale data center's electricity needs, integrating natural gas (potentially with hydrogen blends), solar, geothermal, energy storage, and heat recovery. This approach aims to alleviate pressure on the traditional grid and avoid costs for residential and business customers.
The issue is critically relevant in Saline Township, where OpenAI, Oracle, and Related Digital are developing the 1-gigawatt 'Stargate' data center campus, known as 'The Barn.' This facility's potential power demand is comparable to a major metropolitan area, prompting Michigan policymakers and utilities to reconsider power supply methods. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has initiated a voluntary pledge encouraging data center companies to bring or acquire additional electricity resources.
Beyond electricity, Bratic's integrated systems also address other community concerns such as water usage through closed-loop cooling, noise through mitigation techniques, and fire risks from batteries by advocating for solid-state technology. Bratic emphasizes the potential for job creation and workforce development in skilled trades for constructing and maintaining this new energy infrastructure, presenting a dual economic and environmental opportunity for Michigan.
