The Morgan County Board plans to vote on extending the county’s data center moratorium for another six months. Board members say the extension would provide more time to research regulations and await pending Illinois legislation that could give counties greater control over data center development.

The Morgan County Board is scheduled to vote Oct. 26 on extending its data center moratorium for six months. Chairman Mike Wankel said the proposed extension is tied to pending legislation in Springfield that could give county boards more authority over data centers in areas without countywide zoning.

The decision followed a contentious meeting involving disputes over public comment restrictions, the removal of three attendees and a call from board member Michael Woods for Wankel’s resignation. Woods supported the extension, saying it would give the board more time to study data center regulations and develop public forums. Wankel said the county has not received a specific data center proposal and denied that private discussions were occurring.
