Trenton votes to ban data centers
Trenton voters approved Issue 17 by 80%, banning data centers larger than 25 megawatts within the city. The charter amendment blocks Amazon's proposed 1,000-megawatt project and raises uncertainty about a 250-megawatt Prologis facility under construction.
Trenton voters approved Issue 17 by an 80% margin, amending the city charter to prohibit data centers larger than 25 megawatts. The measure was advanced by neighbors, including Barry Blankenship of the Woodsdale and Trenton Environmental Resistance group, who cited concerns about the facilities' electricity and water demands.
The vote blocks Amazon's plan to annex 600 acres for a proposed 1,000-megawatt data center and could affect a 250-megawatt Prologis facility being built in the city's industrial park. Opponents of the ban, including the Trenton Community Alliance, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce and Prologis, argued that the measure would limit economic opportunities and financial benefits for residents and Edgewood City Schools.
