Pitt County considers one-year data center moratorium
Pitt County commissioners unanimously voted to continue discussions about a possible one-year moratorium on data center construction. Residents voiced concerns about environmental impacts, water usage and higher power bills, while the county prepares an ordinance and public hearing process before any final vote.
A packed Pitt County Commissioners meeting drew residents who supported a possible one-year moratorium on data center development. Speakers cited potential environmental damage, water consumption and effects on electricity bills, while commissioners unanimously agreed to continue considering the proposal.
Under the process presented to the board, Pitt County would draft an ordinance identifying the developments covered, establish an end date and hold a public hearing before taking final action. If adopted, the moratorium would temporarily suspend certain data center construction while the county evaluates new regulations; a final vote date has not been set. Similar moratorium discussions or actions have occurred in Edgecombe County and the town of Farmville.
