Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council to hear public comment on proposed data center rules
Lexington residents are scheduled to address the Urban County Council about proposed data center regulations and the future of a temporary pause on data center development in Fayette County. The proposed rules would limit buildings to 50,000 square feet and require plans addressing energy use, water consumption, noise and other impacts.
Residents of Lexington are expected to speak during a special committee meeting of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council as officials consider proposed rules for data center development. The meeting follows a contentious July session in which residents urged officials to strengthen restrictions and potentially extend the county’s moratorium, which was set to remain in effect through Oct. 31.
The Planning Commission’s recommendations would limit individual data center buildings to 50,000 square feet and require developers to address energy use, water consumption, noise, generator placement, server-room size and other conditions. Council members could approve the recommendations or delay a final decision to make additional changes. Public comment is limited to three minutes per speaker, or up to nine minutes when time is yielded.
