Fort Meade recall effort advances after controversial data center approval
A recall effort against three Fort Meade city leaders is advancing after they controversially approved a data center project. Citizens collected signatures, alleging decisions not in the city's best interest. The city will now verify the petitions.
A recall effort against three Fort Meade city leaders is moving forward following the controversial approval of a proposed data center. Organizers submitted recall petitions to the city clerk's office, targeting Mayor Jarrett Williams, Councilman Kevin McCutcheon, and Commissioner Marilyn McCutcheon. The group collected approximately 430 signatures, exceeding the required 276.
The recall effort stems from public discontent over the city's decision to approve the data center. Organizers allege that decisions made by the city leaders were not in the best interest of Fort Meade, with some allegations extending beyond the vote itself. The city will now verify the submitted signatures to determine their validity.
Councilman Taylor, one of the officials named in the petition, has previously dismissed the allegations as incorrect and characterized the recall effort as "grasping at straws." If a sufficient number of signatures are validated, organizers will then need to gather a second set of signatures to initiate a formal recall election.
